As fuel price have risen in recent years, there has been increasing consumer interest in hybrid engine vehicles. Hybrid electric vehicles use both an engine powered by either gasoline or diesel, along with a rechargeable energy storage system. The petroleum-based engine is used for highway driving, where it recharges the rechargeable energy storage system, which is then used for city driving.
As part of the trend towards fuel economy, the major auto manufacturers have come out with hybrids. Hybrid versions of popular models includes Toyota’s Prius, Camry and Highlander, the Ford Escape, Honda Insight, Saturn Vue, Cadillac Esplanade, Nissan Altima and the Dodge Durango. Hybrid SUVs and pickups are particularly notable because these kinds of vehicles are popular for their practical usage but are not usually the most fuel efficient. When hybrids were first introduced, many consumers tended to think of them as “tree-hugger” vehicles, but as we’ve seen gas getting up to three and even four dollars a gallon, that attitude is changing.
Drivers who need a pickup truck for work use take a real beating in the pocketbook every time gas goes up even a few cents.
The same is true for families that need the passenger space of an SUV. A hybrid represents an opportunity for real savings for such drivers. Some households report that since purchasing a hybrid vehicle they have even been able to return to that classic recreation of yesteryear, the family motoring vacation.
The U.S. Department of Energy issues a list of vehicles with the best and worst fuel efficiency. For 2008, hybrids top the list of most fuel efficient in several size categories. As part of efforts to promote fuel economy, the federal government is offering tax breaks for hybrid vehicle buyers.
Depending on which model you buy and when, there may be energy tax credits available on the purchase of your hybrid.
